National Nursing Assistants Day: The Healthcare Heroes We Can Never Replace

As a nurse, I've worked alongside some incredible people over the years. On National Nursing Assistants Day, I want to take a moment to recognize a group of healthcare workers who often don't receive the appreciation they deserve... nursing assistants.

Whether they're called CNAs, nursing assistants, patient care technicians, or nurse aides, they are often the first smiling face a patient sees in the morning and the last person helping them get comfortable at night.

They answer call lights.

They help patients eat when they're too weak to lift a fork.

They provide comfort during frightening moments.

They notice subtle changes that can make all the difference in patient care.

And they do it all while juggling multiple responsibilities with compassion and professionalism.

Throughout my nursing career, I learned that great patient care is never accomplished by one person. It takes a team. Nursing assistants are an essential part of that team.

Many patients may never remember the name of their physician, but they often remember the nursing assistant who sat with them when they were scared, helped them regain their dignity after an illness, or simply listened when they needed someone to talk to.

Healthcare can be challenging, demanding, and emotionally exhausting. Yet nursing assistants show up every day and continue to provide care when people need it most.

Today, I want to say thank you.

Thank you for the hard work.

Thank you for the kindness.

Thank you for the patience.

Thank you for being the heart of healthcare.

If you've ever been cared for by a nursing assistant who made a difference in your life, take a moment today to tell them how much they mattered.

Happy National Nursing Assistants Day.
